Moonshot AI has officially launched Kimi K3, an impressive 2.8 trillion-parameter open-weight model that claims to be the largest of its kind globally. This announcement comes as a significant shake-up in the AI landscape, particularly for US firms like Anthropic and OpenAI. The model is designed for complex reasoning and coding tasks, boasting a one million-token context window, which allows it to handle a vast amount of information in a single prompt.
Kimi K3 has already demonstrated its capabilities by topping a coding leaderboard managed by UC Berkeley’s Arena platform shortly after its debut. It performed competitively against Anthropic’s Fable 5 and outshined Opus 4.8, as well as various versions of GPT, on GPU kernel optimization benchmarks. Despite these impressive performance metrics, Moonshot acknowledges that Kimi K3 still lags behind the most advanced proprietary models, which has led some experts, like Hussein Abbass from UNSW Canberra, to question its overall competitiveness across diverse tasks.
The market reacted sharply to the launch, with shares of rival Chinese companies Zhipu and Minimax plummeting by 27.7% and 16.5%, respectively, in Hong Kong. This reaction echoes the significant impact that similar releases have had in the past, such as DeepSeek’s debut in 2025, which shifted perceptions about US dominance in AI technology. Tech writer Kevin Xu noted that the market's response to Kimi K3 feels reminiscent of those earlier moments of upheaval.
As the AI race heats up, analysts are noting that Chinese models are gaining traction, partly due to their cost-effectiveness. Some industry experts, including University of Pennsylvania professor Ethan Mollick, believe that Kimi K3 represents a significant leap forward for Chinese AI technologies, branding it as “the closest to the frontier yet” compared to its local peers. The unfolding developments indicate that the competitive landscape in AI is becoming increasingly dynamic and uncertain.
