Polkadot, the brainchild of Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood, has had a tumultuous journey in the blockchain world. From its inception, the project attracted significant investment, amassing around $510.8 million between 2017 and 2020 through various funding rounds, including a notable $145 million raised in just two weeks during its token offering in October 2017, as reported by analyst Crypto Patel.
However, the road was not always smooth. A major hiccup occurred when a bug in the multisignature wallet software of Parity led to approximately $98 million being frozen, a setback that could have derailed many projects. Despite this, Polkadot persevered, launching its mainnet in May 2020 and witnessing its token, DOT, soar to nearly $55 by November 2021.
Fast forward to today, and Polkadot finds itself grappling with the realities of a bear market. After several years of inflation and market decline, DOT's value plummeted, nearing $0.87, with a record low of around $0.80 in June 2026. A technical analysis reveals a long-term downward trend, characterized by lower highs and lower lows, which culminated in a staggering 75% drop.
Looking ahead, analysts see potential for a rebound, but caution that the risk remains as confirmation of a reversal is still pending. Key resistance levels have been identified, with the first significant one at about $1.44. Maintaining this level could help shift the current downward trend, while higher resistances are expected at $4.47 and $9.34.
Nevertheless, there are reasons for optimism. Market expert Ozen highlights that despite recent declines, the fundamental strength of Polkadot remains robust. The DOT/ETH market cap chart has shown new highs and lows post a breakout at the end of June, suggesting that the recent dip may be more about profit-taking than panic selling. If demand increases around previous resistance levels, it could generate momentum to retest earlier highs. Yet, the market is still awaiting confirmation of a genuine recovery, which is a stark contrast to Polkadot's strong fundamentals.
As Polkadot navigates this challenging landscape, it remains to be seen whether it can reclaim its former glory or if it will continue to struggle in a competitive market.
