Alibaba's Qianwen AI model, known as Tongyi Qianwen, has been integrated into Apple Intelligence for users in China, providing access to advanced on-device capabilities for iPhone, iPad, and Mac owners. This collaboration ensures that hundreds of millions of users can benefit from features like text comprehension, image analysis, and content generation, all within the familiar Apple interface.

This partnership, which began in February 2025, was crucial for Apple to comply with China's stringent generative AI regulations. Apple's existing AI technologies, while effective in Western contexts, needed a local ally. By June 2025, Alibaba had rolled out its Qwen3 models, finely tuned for Apple's MLX architecture, allowing smooth integration of their technology.

Chinese users can now enjoy generative AI tools without switching between different applications, as Alibaba's Qwen technology operates behind the scenes to enhance Apple's native functionalities.

The announcement coincided with the Chinese Cyberspace Administration's approval of generative AI services from various companies like Huawei and OPPO for domestic operations, marking a significant step in the Chinese AI landscape.

Alibaba's Tongyi Qianwen model has been under development since its public release in September 2023, and the latest iteration, Qwen3, has been tailored specifically for Apple users. This development provides a glimpse into the commercial viability of Alibaba's AI ecosystem, extending its benefits beyond its own platforms.

Importantly, this collaboration does not involve any cryptocurrencies or blockchain assets, which may reassure stakeholders concerned about regulatory implications. For Apple shareholders, it mitigates risks associated with the limitations of Apple Intelligence in a critical market.
