Lighter has launched a decentralized exchange for perpetual futures inside the Robinhood Wallet. This move marks a bold step in reshaping the payment for order flow model by utilizing blockchain technology, with the backing of Robinhood, a name synonymous with the trading revolution.

Founded in 2022 by Vladimir Novakovski, Lighter operates as an Ethereum layer 2 protocol employing custom zero-knowledge circuits. Since going live on the mainnet in October 2025, the platform has emerged as a strategic partner for Robinhood, allowing users to trade perpetual futures while using USDG as both collateral and the quoted asset. In this partnership, both companies split the revenue 50/50, indicating a strong alignment of interests.

Robinhood Ventures played a crucial role in this development, participating in a $68 million funding round in November 2025, which valued the exchange at approximately $1.5 billion. It is noteworthy that Vlad Novakovski has a mentoring history with Robinhood CEO Vlad Tenev, highlighting the deep connections between the two entities.

How Lighter Works

Central to the innovative structure of Lighter is its unique business model. It adopts a blockchain-based payment for order flow strategy, providing zero fees for retail traders. The revenue stream comes from premium accounts sold to sophisticated firms that access trading data. This model diverges from traditional trading where fees are the primary revenue source.

However, Lighter's services are not available to all. Unfortunately, residents of the US, UK, Canada, Switzerland, UAE, and Singapore cannot access the perpetual futures trading through Robinhood Wallet. For many traders, Lighter may not be a household name. Instead, they will likely interact with it through the Robinhood Wallet interface when they engage in futures trading.

The platform's use of zero-knowledge rollup technology effectively addresses a core challenge in the derivatives market. Typically, perpetual exchanges had to choose between being fast and centralized or fully decentralized but slow. Lighter's architecture ensures quick transaction processing while maintaining verifiable order matching and liquidation capabilities, thus competing effectively with traditional centralized exchanges.
