A man from Jacksonville has successfully reclaimed $710,000 lost to a cryptocurrency scam, marking Florida's largest-ever reimbursement for crypto fraud. The refund was announced by Attorney General James Uthmeier on July 16, highlighting the rare occasions when victims of such scams see their money returned.

The victim fell for a fraudulent work-from-home scheme that promised pay for product reviews. As part of the scam, he was instructed to deposit increasing amounts of cryptocurrency for each product he was allegedly reviewing, only to be cut off when the fraudsters had taken all they could.

Authorities were able to trace the stolen funds to a larger wallet that pooled money from multiple scams. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office played a vital role in tracking down the funds, which led to a civil forfeiture case against the scammers. They chose not to contest the legal action, prompting a court to issue a default judgment that allowed the victim to recover his funds.

Uthmeier expressed pride in making a victim whole again but emphasized that preventing such frauds remains the primary goal for his office. He credited law enforcement efforts that contributed to this successful recovery.
