ZachXBT, a well-known on-chain investigator, has recently expressed his frustration over several meme coins that have been launched in his name without his consent. In response, he sold every token that had been sent to his donation wallet and donated the entire proceeds to charity.
Significant Donation to Venezuelan Relief Efforts
The generous contribution of $25,000 was made to GiveDirectly via The Giving Block, aimed at assisting the victims of the devastating earthquakes that rattled Venezuela on June 24. This disaster, which registered magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, is considered one of the worst in the region in decades.
Impersonation Tokens Flooding the Market
In recent days, tokens featuring ZachXBT’s name have surfaced across multiple blockchains. Traders have inundated his social media with inquiries regarding his endorsement of these coins. However, ZachXBT has consistently distanced himself from meme coins, as his public criteria for investigation explicitly exclude such assets.
Impersonators frequently transfer tokens to public donation wallets to create the illusion of endorsement, leveraging the credibility of established figures without their permission. ZachXBT took to social media to clarify his stance, stating: “Sorry I do not support or promote meme coins. I have just donated $25K (entire amount I sold) to @GiveDirectly via @TheGivingBlock to support charity efforts for the recent Venezuela earthquakes.”
Addressing Speculation and Seeking Transparency
Some critics had accused the investigator of profiting from these tokens, so he made a point to sell all received tokens and publish the receipts to dispel these allegations. ZachXBT also shared a transaction hash confirming the 25,000 Tether (USDT) transfer, allowing anyone to verify the donation on-chain. This move is particularly noteworthy considering that he previously identified 16 X accounts promoting meme coins to unwary followers.
As the recovery efforts in Venezuela continue despite cryptocurrency donations moving faster than traditional aid ZachXBT’s actions highlight the ongoing issue of impersonation in the crypto space. Tokens utilizing famous names often see a speculative rise, reminiscent of the recent surge in popularity for GTA 6 meme coins.
While the crypto community mobilized quickly to assist Venezuela after the earthquakes, the persistent problem of imitation tokens remains a challenge. The recent incidents underscore the necessity for vigilance and accountability within the crypto industry.
