Tether has made a bold move by investing $7 million in Pact Labs, aiming to strengthen its presence in the payroll and lending sectors with its USA₮ stablecoin. This Series A funding is a strategic step to enhance Tether’s federally regulated dollar-backed token in the U.S. market.
Pact Labs operates at the crossroads of traditional financial technology and blockchain. It has reportedly facilitated nearly $2 billion in loans via smart contracts on the blockchain, with over $1 billion in loan originations.
The firm supports over 500,000 users across seven fintech partners, providing essential infrastructure that allows these fintech applications to engage with blockchain liquidity without requiring users to comprehend the complexities of blockchain technology.
With operations spanning various blockchain networks, including Aptos and Celo, Pact Labs smoothly integrates stablecoin functionality into existing financial products. This approach allows users to benefit from blockchain without deep technical knowledge.
This funding round is part of Tether’s broader strategy, following a significant $100 million investment in Anchorage Digital Bank earlier this year. Anchorage is responsible for issuing USA₮, further solidifying Tether’s regulatory compliance.
As Tether invests heavily in both Anchorage and Pact Labs, totaling $107 million, it reflects a commitment to building a comprehensive operational framework. However, this substantial investment raises concerns about navigating a regulatory landscape that is still evolving.
In a competitive environment, other players like Circle with its USDC and PayPal's PYUSD are also vying for a stake in the market. As the stablecoin market becomes increasingly dynamic, traders should monitor Pact Labs' partnerships to see how they impact USA₮ adoption. The reported $2 billion in loans highlights potential traction, yet the real test will be transitioning this activity towards specific volumes for USA₮.
