OpenAI is set to unveil its first hardware device, a smart speaker, with a price range between $200 and $300. This screenless device aims to compete with established players like Amazon, Apple, and Google in the smart home market.
The speaker will integrate ChatGPT technology, feature a camera and various environmental sensors, marking a significant shift from OpenAI's software roots. The expected launch is in 2027, following the company's strategic acquisition of Jony Ive’s AI hardware startup io Products for around $6.4 billion in May 2025.
CEO Sam Altman has described early prototypes as “jaw-dropping,” indicating that this device will not only listen for commands but also interact with its surroundings. Manufacturing is anticipated to occur in the US or Vietnam.
In a notable twist, Apple filed a lawsuit against OpenAI for alleged trade secret theft around the same time the smart speaker plans were publicized. OpenAI has denied any infringement on Apple’s products.
This move into hardware is part of OpenAI's strategy to diversify revenue and potentially prep for an IPO, with plans to launch up to five hardware devices in total.
The price positioning of the speaker is intriguing, as it is more accessible than Apple's HomePod yet pricier than Amazon's basic Echo Dot. The market for smart speakers is becoming increasingly competitive, and OpenAI’s entry could reshape the space.
