A South Korean developer faced an astonishing billing error when Anthropic's system attempted to charge him $16.6 million despite no actual usage. The user, known as remy_notes, received a series of phantom invoices that not only blocked his credit card but also led to four frustrating days of support inquiries.

The first invoice appeared on July 7, amounting to $1,669,875. Just a day later, a second invoice skyrocketed to $16,627,739. This occurred without any recorded activity on the developer’s account, raising immediate concerns about potential phishing attempts. However, the emails came from Anthropic's official domain and utilized legitimate payment processing through Stripe.

With zero API usage, no registered payment method, and no billable keys in his dashboard, the developer found it hard to explain the charges. His bank rejected two attempts to process these staggering amounts due to exceeding transaction limits, ultimately blocking his primary credit card.

Anthropic's Response to the Incident

On July 12, Anthropic acknowledged the error, clarifying that no funds were collected. The company attributed the issue to a misconfigured automatic credit reload feature, which they subsequently disabled. Interestingly, Anthropic did not provide clarity on how the reload value ballooned to such a significant sum.

The resolution process was anything but straightforward. It took the user four days and more than 18 emails to receive confirmation that the invoices were void. During this time, he only received automated responses instead of personal assistance, prompting him to demand a reply by Monday afternoon, Korean time.

Wider Implications for the Industry

This incident highlights ongoing challenges within the industry, particularly regarding AI billing systems. A recent review by audit startup Vaudit of $34 million in invoices from 60 enterprise clients revealed around $1.7 million in overcharges. This equates to an approximate 5% error rate, affecting large companies like Panasonic, HP, and Honda.

For users, this case serves as a crucial reminder to regularly review billing dashboards and monitor credit card notifications to prevent similar issues from occurring.
