The Ethereum Foundation has officially dissolved its Protocol Support team as part of a significant restructuring effort, which has led to the reduction of nearly 20% of its workforce. This decision comes after five years of the team coordinating crucial upgrades and developer initiatives on a global scale.
What's at Stake for the Ethereum Community
This reshuffling could have impactful consequences for Ethereum’s development trajectory. The Protocol Support team's role was vital in facilitating:
- Core developer meetings and discussions.
- Tracking progress on network upgrades.
- Supporting the Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs).
- Training new contributors through fellowship programs.
Despite the disbandment, core protocol work will continue under the Foundation’s new organizational framework. However, the future of some support initiatives remains uncertain.
The closure was confirmed by the Protocol Support account on X, which also encouraged Ethereum-related organizations to reach out to former team members in search of experienced developers.
Mario Havel, a long-time member of the Protocol Support team, remains with the Ethereum Foundation but noted that his entire team has been let go. In a recent post, he expressed his ongoing commitment to the Foundation while acknowledging the challenges ahead: “I am still part of EF, continuing my work and figuring out what’s most needed in the future,” he wrote.
The Role of Protocol Support in Ethereum's Ecosystem
For over five years, the Protocol Support team played a pivotal role in several key areas:
- Organizing All Core Developers meetings where client teams reviewed proposed upgrades.
- Tracking the readiness of network forks and aiding contributors in navigating Ethereum’s technical roadmap.
- Maintaining a public platform named Forkcast, which tracks Ethereum upgrades and development plans.
The program also included the Ethereum Protocol Fellowship, designed to educate developers looking to engage with Ethereum’s core ecosystem. Havel, along with former colleague Josh Davis, dedicated four years to building this program, which has successfully onboarded numerous developers into the Ethereum community.
Looking Ahead: What's Next for Ethereum and Its Developers
As Ethereum moves forward, it remains essential to monitor the evolving situation regarding the restructuring and its effects on ongoing projects and initiatives. Stakeholders should pay attention to upcoming announcements and how they may reshape the community's dynamics in the wake of these changes.
