The much-anticipated 32-player lineup for Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves at the Esports World Cup 2026 has officially been finalized following a Last Chance Qualifier held in Paris on July 5.
The Last Chance Qualifier was an intense showdown, with AbaO overcoming WBG Xiaocai with a score of 3-1, securing the final position in the main tournament bracket.
Exciting Tournament Details
This year's Fatal Fury event, featuring a staggering $1 million prize pool, will take place from July 7 to 10 in Paris. The tournament sets the stage for returning champion GO1 to defend his EWC title against fierce competitors including Xiaohai, Laggia, and Dany El Maza as they vie for valuable Club Championship points.
The competition’s format is structured into three distinct phases:
- Phase 1: Four groups of eight players will compete in a GSL-style double-elimination format, with matches being best-of-five. The top four from each group will move on.
- Phase 2: The remaining players will form two groups of eight, again competing in a GSL-style bracket, with the top four from each group advancing to the playoffs.
- Phase 3: The final eight will enter a single-elimination bracket, featuring best-of-nine matches.
Cash prizes will be awarded generously, with first place receiving $250,000, while second and third places earn $130,000 and $70,000, respectively. Even players finishing from fifth to 32nd will take home a cash payout, with the minimum reward set at $7,500.
Competitors and Qualifications
Among the notable participants, GO1, the reigning EWC champion, is returning after defeating Xiaohai in the grand finals last year. Meanwhile, Xiaohai is back in the fray following his victory at Evo 2026, solidifying his status as a top contender.
Dany “El Maza” qualified through Dreamhack Birmingham, representing Latin America, and Darkangel, last year’s EWC third-place finisher, earned his spot through GEMA LIVE in Mexico City. Others who made it include mi2ha4, ZJZ, Basher, Naiwang, Fenritti, and Reynald, coming from various tournaments including Combo Breaker and Evo.
Noteworthy Developments
In an intriguing turn of events, Kenshiro, a DLC character from the popular franchise Fist of the North Star, has been banned from use in the Last Chance Qualifier. However, it remains to be seen whether this ban will apply to the main event.
This tournament marks a significant return for the Fatal Fury series after 26 years, launching its first mainline game since 1999's Garou: Mark of the Wolves. With such a thrilling setup, all eyes will be on Paris as players prepare to battle for glory and cash prizes.
