A retired grandmother from Florida has tragically lost over $60,000 from her Citibank accounts within just a few hours. This shocking loss has left her reeling, as the money represented years of hard work and savings she and her husband accumulated over four decades.
According to reports from WINK News, Dolores Dagrosa learned of the financial theft shortly after returning home from celebrating her 40th wedding anniversary. "This was the money we saved, blood, sweat, and tears, working and everything, for the last 40 years. We sacrificed. We have had three sons for all these years, and we put the money away," she shared, reflecting the depth of her family's struggle and sacrifices for a better future.
Impact on Family and Future Plans
The unexpected loss has prevented Dagrosa from traveling to meet her newborn grandson, whose birth was fraught with complications. Concerned and desperate, she promptly reported the issue to Citibank and lodged complaints with several authorities, including the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, the FTC, the Florida Attorney General, and the CFPB. Additionally, she made a trip to Fort Lauderdale to confront a bank manager in hopes of retrieving her funds.
Despite her persistent efforts, Dagrosa finds herself without answers or access to her accounts over a month later. Citibank claimed they were in contact with her but had no concrete updates regarding her case. "It could be 30 to 60 days is what they say to me: that they’re escalating it, that somebody’s going to call me, but I haven’t received a call. They cut me off from seeing my own account. This money I need to pay my bills and live my life, that’s a long time to not get this money back. I’m retired," she lamented.
Speculation on Causes of the Loss
Experts suggest that the evolving landscape of cyber threats, including AI-enhanced phishing schemes, could play a role in such incidents, although no malicious calls were reported in this particular case. The incident highlights the growing concerns regarding bank security and consumer trust.
As investigations continue, Dagrosa remains hopeful for a resolution while grappling with the ramifications of losing her life’s savings.
