Earlier this week, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky's X account was compromised, resulting in an unusual series of posts praising blockchain tokenization, which were later removed.
Chesky humorously acknowledged the incident, stating, "To the person who hacked my account earlier this week: thanks for all the new crypto followers. To my new crypto followers: I'm going to be a very disappointing follow." His lighthearted comment followed the unexpected promotion of asset tokenization, a topic he rarely discusses.
Controversy Over the Hack
The deleted posts claimed Chesky had been quietly observing the tokenization sector and suggested that blockchain representations of real-world assets might lead to significant financial innovations. This sudden interest drew skepticism from some users. Developer Jarrod Watts questioned the motive behind a hacker posting about real-world assets, while investor Graeme Moore sarcastically remarked on the absurdity of such a hack.
Airbnb has treated the situation as a serious breach, reaching out to X's security team to secure the account after the incident. Despite their efforts, some remain doubtful about the authenticity of the hack, with speculation that the AI-generated posts could have stemmed from an internal error.
This incident highlights a growing trend where hackers compromise high-profile accounts to promote fraudulent schemes. In the past, numerous celebrity accounts have been taken over to endorse fake cryptocurrencies and scams, with one notable incident in 2020 resulting in over $100,000 being stolen via a Bitcoin giveaway fraud.
